A thematic literature review on politicians’ use of financial and non-financial information: Insights and future directions

The ISCAP/IPP Accounting Webinar Series

On May 20,  2026, at 9:30 am, an online webinar entitled “A thematic literature review on politicians’ use of financial and non-financial information: Insights and future directions” will take place as part of the ISCAP/IPP Accounting Webinar Series.

The webinar is integrated into the activities of the following degree programmes: the Bachelor’s in Accounting and Administration; Bachelor’s in Administrative Assistance and Translation; Bachelor’s in Business Communication; Bachelor’s in Creativity and Business Innovation; Master’s in Accounting and Finance; Master’s in Corporate Finance; Master’s in Auditing; and Master’s in Business and Legal Practices in the Social Economy.

Bionotes:

Susana Jorge is associate professor with habilitation at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra (FEUC). Lecturer in Business Financial Accounting and Public Sector Accounting. Co-chair of the Master’s Degree in Accounting and Finance. She is affiliated researcher of CeBER – Centre for Business and Economics research, University of Coimbra, and collaborator researcher of CICP – Centro de Investigação em Ciência Política (Research Centre in Political Science), University of Minho, and of CICF – Centro de Investigação em Contabilidade e Fiscalidade (Research Centre in Accounting and Taxation), Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave. Her research interests relate to Public Sector Accounting and Financial Management, especially focusing financial reporting and transparency, IPSAS, the use of accounting information by politicians, and the Local Government.
She is Associate Editor of Accounting and Management Review, and member of the editorial board of International Journal of Public Administration; Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting and Financial Management; Accounting in Europe; Public Money and Management; Journal of Accounting and Organizational Change; and Spanish Accounting Review.
Susana is a Member of the Public Sector Accounting Committee of the European Accounting Association (EAA-PSAC); Member of the Portuguese Stock Exchange Advisory Board; and Member of the Supervisory Board of the Portuguese Institute of Statutory Auditors.
She was also Member of the Portuguese Accounting Standard-setter, public sector committee, between 2013 and 2017; Chair of the Executive Board of the Comparative International Governmental Accounting Research (CIGAR) Network between 2019 and 2023; Member of the Academic Advisory Group of the IPSASB (IPSASB-AAG) between 2020 and 2025.

Sónia Nogueira teaches Public Sector Accounting, Public Audit and Management, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, at the School of Public Management, Communication and Tourism (EsACT) at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB) since 2000. She has been Dean of the same school since July 2021.
Her research interests focus on Public Sector Accounting and Management, particularly on the Local Government area - Financial Reporting. Her research focuses on issues such as, the usefulness of financial reporting in the context of decision-making of Local Government; the role of Higher Education institutions as promoters of regional competitiveness; and the role of European Funding in the development of rural tourism.
She was awarded the first degree in Audit and Management Control (School of Technology and Management, Polytechnic Institute of Bragança) in 1999; the MSc in Management and Accounting (Economics and Business School, University of Minho, Portugal) in 2006; and the PhD in Economics and Business – Local Government Accounting (Business and Economic Sciences School, Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain) in 2012.
She is a researcher at the Political Science Research Center of the University of Minho. She is the author of several scientific articles in peer-reviewed and indexed scientific journals (WoS/Scopus databases), book chapters. She serves as a member of the Program Board and Organizing Committees for some Scientific Committees of International Conferences and has collaborated as a reviewer with several journals.

Adriana Silva is an Assistant Professor at the Coimbra Business School – ISCAC, Polytechnic University of Coimbra, Portugal. She is also a researcher at the Centre for Business and Economics Research (CeBER), University of Coimbra. Her work has been published in several international-indexed journals. Her research interests focus on the enforcement of accounting standards, financial and sustainability reporting and the use of accounting information by politicians.
