Aims and Objectives

The ERASMUS Intensive Programme (IP) Legal Systems and Immigration Law in the EU: Translating and Interpreting in Diversity is a short programme of studies in the specialist field of translation and law.

During the intensive 15-day training programme, students and teachers from the partner countries are introduced to the legal systems of the participant countries and to immigration law within the European Union, as a means to complement translation and interpreting skills in this specialist domain.

Students are recruited among undergraduates of law or translation/interpreting courses in the 7 partner higher education institutions: France, Germany, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and The Czech Republic.

Some of the activities of the programme of studies include:

  1. An introduction to the European Legal systems, and that of the organizing country.
  2. Workshops on the differences in the legal systems of the partner countries.
  3. An introduction to the Law of Immigration in Europe and in the organizing country.
  4. Visits to the courts.
  5. Presentations and debates on the profile of the sworn/certified translator: skills, resources, ethics, guaranties.
  6. Practice carried out in multilingual, multinational and multicultural teams.

Besides contributing to the development of students competences in the specialist fields of legal translation and court interpreting, the IP also contributes to strengthen cooperation among the partner higher education institutions.
