Workshops sold out! – Registration available for plenary sessions only.

Next 31 March, Oficina de Tradução 2022 (OT), regularly held from 2003 to 2017, will take place at Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração do Porto (ISCAP-P.PORTO).

This year’s edition will be dealing with the topic “from translation to post-editing – the reality of augmented translation”. To help us do that, the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT), AP | Portugal and CEOS.PP are joining us as our partners.

Why machine translation and post-editing

Machine translation has had considerable development, particularly due to massive, real-time content production. As a result of the covid-19 pandemic, online real-time communication has also grown at a fast pace for the past two years, giving momentum to language technology and expanding the industry to meet the needs for multilingual communication in e-commerce, online support services, language apps, etc.

According to Common Sense Advisory, companies offering language services involving machine translation and post-editing (MTPE) increased by 45% between 2016 and 2019 (even before the pandemic). Post-editing is therefore no longer a matter of choice but a reality, as translation increasingly becomes an open-ended dialogue between the user and the machine, defined as “augmented translation” by  Common Sense Advisory in 2017.

Far from being a sci-fi scenario, this human-machine interaction does not put the user at a disadvantage. On the contrary, through augmented translation, machine translation turns the translator into a fundamental piece, at the core of the translation process.

What we have in store for you

OT 2022 will approach these synergies, as well as the challenges and advantages of machine translation when applied to technical translation. Together with our highly qualified guests, we have divided the event into two parts. Firstly, a group of professionals with vast expertise will take part of the morning to discuss different aspects of human-computer interaction in technical communication and translation. Secondly, two workshops conducted by DGT and AP | Portugal will be held in the multimedia labs of ISCAP-P.PORTO, where a limited number of participants will have the opportunity to train their post-editing skills. The keynote speakers’ presentations will be live streamed, with simultaneous interpreting into English.

Closing the event, all these concepts, as well as the characteristics of today’s translation market will be addressed in a round table discussion.

Enrolment

  1. Admission is free, though subject to enrolment through this link;
  2. Workshop enrolment will give priority to translation students from ISCAP-P.PORTO, but is open to the public (limited number of places);
  3. The workshop conducted by DGT is limited to 20 places in the instructor’s classroom + 40 places in two adjacent classrooms connected to the main one through video conference devices.
