“Lisbon’s Street Art(scape) in Madonna’s Madame X (2020) Visual Imaginary”
Rogério Puga, FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa

In 2017, Madonna moved to Lisbon where she lived until 2020. During her stay, the pop singer was influenced by Fado and music and art of the African/Afro-descendant and Brazilian communities (Morna, Funaná, Batucadeiras), and was depicted walking around and posing in the Portuguese capital, especially in her own social media. Her persona Madame X, also a fadista, was filmed in Lisbon, a diasporic city, and the video “Funana” and the documentary “The World of Madame X”” incorporate some of the city’s street art. This lecture analyzes the use of Lisbon’s street art in the visual ‘glocalized’ world of Madame X, as well as the representation of Lisbon, which had recently become a mass tourist attraction.
